Product Description
Doxazosin is a long-acting medication that promotes vasodilation by selectively and competitively blocking alpha-1 adrenergic receptors. This mechanism helps to relax the smooth muscles in blood vessel walls, improving blood flow and reducing resistance. Unlike non-selective alpha-blockers, Doxazosin offers targeted action with a lower risk of adverse systemic effects. Additionally, long-term use of Doxazosin does not lead to tolerance, making it a reliable option for ongoing treatment of cardiovascular and urological conditions.
Safety Information
Indications
Doxazosin is primarily prescribed for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), helping relieve symptoms such as frequent or difficult urination by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck. It is suitable for patients with BPH regardless of whether they also have high blood pressure. In patients who have both arterial hypertension and prostate enlargement, Doxazosin effectively addresses both conditions with a single medication. Additionally, Doxazosin is used as an antihypertensive agent either as monotherapy or in combination with other drugs such as thiazide diuretics, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers (CCBs), or ACE inhibitors, depending on individual patient needs and blood pressure response.
How to Use Doxazosin
Dosing of Doxazosin is tailored to each patient’s condition and response to treatment. The initial therapeutic dose usually starts at 1 mg (0.001 g) per day during the first one to two weeks of therapy. This dose may then be increased gradually to 2 mg (0.002 g) per day and adjusted over time if necessary. In some cases, depending on the blood pressure level and symptom severity, the dosage may be increased up to 16 mg (0.016 g) per day. It is typically taken once daily, and close monitoring during dose adjustments helps ensure optimal results with minimal side effects.
Contraindications
Doxazosin should not be used by individuals with known hypersensitivity to quinazoline derivatives. Its use during pregnancy and lactation is not well-studied, so it should only be prescribed during these periods if the potential benefits outweigh the risks. While animal studies have not shown teratogenic effects, caution is still advised. Extra care should also be taken in patients with impaired liver function, aortic or mitral valve stenosis, or a history of orthostatic hypotension.
Side Effects
Doxazosin is generally well tolerated, but some patients may experience side effects such as dizziness, headache, fatigue, drowsiness, rhinitis, nausea, swelling, or a general feeling of weakness. These reactions are usually mild and transient. In rare cases, urinary incontinence may occur. If any of these effects become persistent or bothersome, medical consultation is recommended to reassess the treatment plan.
